On November? ?7,2024 Professor Toshio Ando from Nano Life Science Institute received Leona Esaki Award.

The Leona Esaki Award is given to researchers from research institutes of Japan who have been involved in research in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology, or in the field of physical properties related to quantum effects, and who have produced research achievements that are expected to pioneer new fields and have been highly acclaimed worldwide. Professor Ando was awarded the prize in recognition of his development of the high-speed atomic force microscope.
The award ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Tsukuba International Congress Center in February or March? ?2025.

Professor Ando comments:

I am very surprised and honored to receive this prestigious award, which I did not expect at all. I understand that this award is a result of the high regard given to the microscope (high-speed AFM) I have developed and the research on its bio-applications.
Although nano-scale protein molecules are macromolecules that are responsible for all life phenomena, the mechanism by which they function is not well understood. A major reason for this is that it is impossible to directly observe protein molecules in action in liquid as moving images. High-speed AFM has made this impossibility possible for the first time. Now we can see various protein molecules and DNA at work, and thus understand biological phenomena in detail.
The road to success was not smooth, but with the help of many dedicated colleagues and students, we managed to reach our goal. I would like to thank them again.
