December? ?22, Kanazawa University Strategic Project for Development of Doctoral Students and Research Promotion (HaKaSe?) held the "10th Sansan-juku for Next-Generation Doctoral Talents × Project Briefing Session?". Approximately 70 students from all bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs participated in person, and over 100 participated online.

This project has two sessions: Part 1: "10th Sansan-juku for Next-Generation Doctoral Talents" and Part 2: "Project Briefing Session".

The first part of the "10th Sansan-juku for Next-Generation Doctoral Talents" featured a lecture by Dr. Kazumi Kato, Fellow of The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and Director of its Innovation School, on the topic of "The Key to Innovation: Advice on Doctoral Degree Programs". Looking back on her career path from her days as a researcher devoted to research to her current involvement in the management of the institute and the strengthening of Japan's research capabilities, Dr. Kato spoke frankly not only about the joys of research, but also about the bitter experiences she has had. She also presented the current status of Japan as a country of science and technology, measures to strengthen research capabilities, and efforts to encourage doctoral candidates to play an active role. Many students were deeply impressed by Dr. Kato's words, in which she talked about her policy of never forgetting "for what purpose" and the importance of "taking on challenges when opportunities arise".

In the second part of the "Project Briefing Session," Akiharu Morimoto Director of the Executive Committee for HaKaSe?/Trustee (General Overview, University Reform, Education, and Information) / Vice President?, gave an overview of the project and explained the application process for the April 2026 term. Then, three selected students who are employed by HaKaSe+ for SPRING and BOOST, a doctoral student support project, talked about their reasons for pursuing a doctoral degree, their career visions beyond that, and their experiences of learning and overcoming difficulties in the doctoral program.

During the talk session at the end of the event, all the speakers and the moderator, Professor Fumiyuki Ishii of Nanomaterials Research Institute (HaKaSe? Executive Committee Member), exchanged opinions on several topics, and the conversation turned to what motivated them to pursue doctoral degrees, creating a friendly atmosphere.

At HaKaSe?, our mission is to nurture and produce doctoral students who will be active in the future society, and we will support students as they begin their careers as doctoral candidates.
