The "International University Collaboration Symposium on UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and Global Geoparks" was held from March 24 to 26, 2025, at Kanazawa University’s Kakuma Campus and in Hakusan City, Ishikawa Prefecture.
On March 24, the symposium was organized by Associate Professor Aida Mammadova of the International Research Center for Japan Studies, who also serves as a UNESCO Chair holder. Hans Tulstrup from the UNESCO MAB Programme participated and gave a presentation on the future goals of UNESCO’s “Man and the Biosphere” initiative. After that, discussions and presentations were held on sustainability and international cooperation, with representatives from France, Germany, Finland, India, Turkey, the Philippines, and Japan.
On March 25 and 26, the participants visited Hakusan City Hall and stayed in Shiramine, a nationally designated Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. They learned about the Mount Hakusan Biosphere Reserve and the Hakusan Tedorigawa UNESCO Global Geopark. Through this symposium, participants reaffirmed the importance of strengthening international cooperation and enhancing student exchange programs.
