On March 7, Kanazawa University Articulation Center for High School and University hosted an online "Pre-Entrance Roundtable for KUGS Special Admissions for 2025". This roundtable is for students who have passed the KUGS Special Entrance Examination (graduates of the KUGS High School-University Connection Program) who will be admitted in the new academic year.
The purpose of this roundtable was to enhance the student's motivation to study at university by reviewing their studies in high school and discussing their aspirations and concerns about studying at university, as well as to build a community after entering university. The 24 high school students from all over Japan were divided into four groups and actively exchanged opinions, moderated by a facilitator who is a senior at Kanazawa University.
In the first half of the event, the participants introduced each other to the activities they had been working on with a sense of purpose during high school, such as inquiry-based learning and extracurricular activities, and exchanged questions and impressions. In the second half, the participants shared their enthusiasm and concerns about university life. The experienced senior students answered questions about university class schedules, how to take courses, how to start part-time work, clubs, and living alone, which seemed to ease their concerns. Participants who were interested in studying abroad also had a lively discussion about the country they wanted to study in. Many of the participants were excited and anxious about the big changes, their friendships will undergo when they go to university, and the senior students used their own experiences to offer advice on building relationships at university.
In the survey conducted after the event, participants commented, "Being able to get to know people in the same department before enrolling helped to ease a lot of my anxiety," "As we talked, I was impressed by what the other participants had learned in high school and at the same time, it made me more excited about learning at university," and "It was inspiring to see that many people were making various preparations before enrollment."
Through this roundtable discussion, not only did the participants overcome their initial anxieties, but they also seemed to be able to inspire each other and increase their motivation to enroll in university.
