Teacher Manabu Yoshioka from College of Human and Social Sciences, School of Teacher Education, Affiliated School for Special Needs Educationhas developed a white cane tip for visually impaired children. On February 17, Kanazawa University launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for the production of 1,500 canes for visually impaired school kids throughout Japan.
The ferrule used this time is called a roller type, and compared to the commonly used pencil type,
1) Improved understanding of road conditions: improved safety and increased sense of security
2) Lightweight: easy for children to handle, less tiring, less strain on the hands
3) High durability: not easily broken, easy to use
4) Improved maintainability: no need for a professional to replace parts, and reduced costs (time and money) associated with part replacement.
In June 2024, we received the "Ergonomics Good Practice Award Grand Prize" from the Japan Ergonomics Society.
Children who have actually tried the samples commented: "it feels like I'm stroking the road surface with my hand" and "it's fun to walk on." We would like to provide this to 1,500 children attending schools for the blind nationwide.
In order to make this a reality, we need your cooperation. If you are interested, we would appreciate your support!
