Kanazawa University High School-University Connection Round Table "Inquiry/STEAM Festa 2024 - Ignite the Inquiry Spirit of High School Students"

On December 15, Kanazawa University Center for Management of Teaching and Learning hosted the High School-University Connection Round Table "Inquiry/STEAM Festa 2024 - Ignite the Inquiry Spirit of High School Students" as part of STEAM education that integrates the humanities and sciences and crosses disciplines. This project was planned to create a place for "high school-university-graduate connection" where high school students and undergraduate/graduate students mutually learn from each other with the keywords of inquiry-based learning and STEAM education. A total of 104 participants, including 56 high school students from 20 high schools of three prefectures in Hokuriku region as well as undergraduate and graduate students from Kanazawa University participated in the event.

First, after an opening address by Trustee Akiharu Morimoto (in charge of education), an icebreaking session was held by Assistant Professor Chihiro Kariya and Assistant Professor Chiaki Tanaka from Articulation Center for High School and University and students from the Human Resources Development Program (KU-STEAM). Next, facilitator Mr. Hiroshi Izumi, general director of motibase together with students, moderated the session, supported by Mr. Junichiro Murakami, representative of Inc. mumm /My Project Fukui Prefecture Office, and others, and university and graduate school students had dialogues with high school students on themes such as exploration. In addition, Assistant Professor Masatoshi Nakano from Articulation Center for High School and University explained the various learning opportunities for high school students at Kanazawa University through the introduction of the KUGS special entrance examination system (*1) and the Kanazawa University STELLA program (*2).

The high school students who participated shared their impressions: "I had been doing inquiry-based learning without really understanding it until now, but now I've finally found a research topic that I want to learn about and I was able to learn how to think about inquiry" and "Talking to students from various schools changed the way I see things, and interacting with the university students helped me clarify what I want to research". The high school teachers and parents who accompanied the students also expressed their hope for further holding of the event in the future.
