On November 9th, the Human Resource Development Unit of Frontier Science and Social Co-creation Initiative participated in the "Rice Farming at a World Heritage Site -Grand Harvest Festival-" held in Shimonashi, Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture as part of Project: AERU, where 14 students from Kanazawa University deepened their friendships with local residents.
The students had a valuable opportunity to experience Gokayama's unique food culture, learning how to make red turnip dishes from a chef and experiencing soba noodles using ingredients such as rice and buckwheat harvested in Gokayama. Afterwards, they enjoyed the finished dishes with local residents and savored the bounty of the harvest.
In the afternoon, participants moved to Ainokura Gassho-style Village and experienced making Gokayama traditional paper washi, a nationally designated traditional craft. After learning about the history and manufacturing process of Gokayama washi paper, they made their own paper with their own design under the guidance of a craftsman.
Kanazawa University signed a comprehensive partnership agreement with Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture in December 2014, and in April 2016, with the support of Nanto City, established the "Kanazawa University Seminar House Sukeichi" in the Ainokura Gassho-style village of Gokayama. In 2018, the university also registered as an owner of the rice terrace owner project under the name "Kanazawa University Seminar House Sukeichi" and participats every year in the "Agricultural Work Day for Everyone in Gokayama" which includes rice planting experience in May and rice harvesting experience in September. These events provides students with opportunities for local interaction and cultural experiences, while supporting the revitalization of the Gokayama region.
