On December 5, ZATSUDAN NO CHIKARA x Diversity Promotion Symposium was held at the Kanazawa University Biomass and Green Innovation Center, Step Hall. Dr. Katharine Carrico (Visiting Professor of University of Pennsylvania), winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine, was invited as a lecturer, and about 200 people, including on-site and on-line participants, attended the event.
After the opening address by Kanazawa Univetsity President Takashi Wada, Dr. Carrico gave a talk on her background, research, and life as a researcher, including stories of hardship.
Next, a Q&A session was held with students. They enthusiastically asked a wide range of questions to Dr. Carrico, from lifestyle-related topics such as how to maintain motivation for research and the secret to success, to technical topics related to Dr. Carrico's mRNA research, and she answered each one carefully. Dr. Carrico encouraged the students, saying "Rather than comparing yourself to others, it is important to pursue what you love".
Participants commented that they were glad to have a chance to hear a Nobel laureate speach, and that they learned a lot about life. It was a valuable opportunity for the students of Kanazawa University to come into contact with female researchers who are active in the world.
