On November 24, 14 people in their 50s to 70s participated in "Considering Water Environmental Pollution by Chemical Substances - Disinfectants Necessary for Countermeasures against Infectious Diseases" at Kakumachi Plaza.
First, Associate Professor Seiya Hanamoto, Environment Preservation Center, introduced chemical substances whose use has been banned so far with regard to water environmental pollution, including the four major pollution diseases. He also addressed the issue of these chemicals remaining as residual pharmaceuticals in food and the environment, which adversely affect aquatic organisms, and explained that "risk management" to reduce their use has become an issue. He then discussed cationic surfactants contained in detergents and hand sanitizers, and reported the results of research on disinfection of sewage treatment facilities and livestock breeding facilities.
Finally, he provided answers to questions from those who had worked in chemical plants and were troubled by the disposal of old pesticides, giving the students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of environmental risks that may not be readily apparent to the naked eye.
