On September 28, a public lecture entitled "The formation of knightly ideals in the middle ages in Europe" was held at Kakumachi Plaza with 17 participants in their 50s to 80s.
The lecturer professor Toshiyuki Tanaka from Institute of Human and Social Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, prefaced his remarks by saying that knights were important for understanding of the European Middle Ages, and that the image was associated with courtesy for ladies and mounted warriors. The first half of the lecture was devoted to "God's Peace Movement and the Warrior of Christ," and the second half was devoted to "The Knight of the Bloodline and the Knight of Virtue," and the changes in Christ's sense of mission as a warrior and the qualities required of a knight were deciphered from historical sources.
Students commented that they were able to understand the ideal and actual images of knights and that their image of the Crusades had changed.
