On September 14, in Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, the Human Resource Development Group of Frontier Science and Social Co-creation Initiative held the "Gokayama Autumn Rice Harvesting and Husking Experience" as part of Project: AERU. 12 Kanazawa University students participated in the event.
Participating students experienced harvesting rice by hand and hanging rice on a rack to dry. They harvested the autumn harvest under the advice from local residents on how to use a sickle and how to tie the rice with straw. In the afternoon, the participants experienced baking rice crackers at "Sasaraya," a Toyama rice cracker store established in 1924.
Students who participated in the tour commented: "Harvesting rice and hanging the rice with a scissors was more fun than I had imagined, and I was able to enjoy Gokayama in one day, including the hot springs and rice cracker baking" and "It was a very good opportunity to learn about the good qualities of the region".
In December 2014, Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, concluded a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, and in April 2016, with the support of Nanto City, established "Kanazawa University Seminar House SUKEICHI" in the Gokayama Ainokura Gassho-Zukuri Village. In 2008, Kanazawa University was registered as an owner under the name of "Kanazawa University Seminar House SUKEICHI" for the terraced rice field owner project in the same village. Through these activities, Kanazawa University supports the revitalization of the Gokayama region and provides Kanazawa University students opportunities to interact with local people and learn about local traditional culture.
